TO PAROS

Picturesque cobblestoned alleyways, whitewashed balconies with bougainvilleas in full bloom, a vibrant little port filled with traditional fishing boats and dotted with restaurants and lively bars. Naoussa, the second-largest village in Paros, is situated on its northern shore and is one of the most sought-after destinations in the Cyclades.

Discover the island’s shopping centre, where traditional and contemporary meet for an unforgettable experience. The whitewashed shades that are prevalent in all destinations of the Aegean Sea play a starring role here, as do the neoclassical manors which can be found amid its narrow Cycladic alleyways. The East and West meet harmoniously with a 13th century Venetian castle looking on from above, and the 6th century Byzantine church Panagia Ekatontapiliani as one of the most significant monuments in Paros.

It was built during the 15th century in the mountains of Paros, aiming to protect residents of coastal villages from pirate attacks. Until today, Lefkes is one of the most profoundly beautiful villages in the Cyclades, with its traditional character unmarred by the passage of many centuries: beloved island architecture, quaint windmills, whitewashed houses with shutters painted in blue peeking out under a covering of purple bougainvillea, and the timeless shade of ancient trees. Immerse yourself in the sound of cicadas as you stroll aimlessly through winding alleyways, each leading to a destination more timeless than the next. 

Just across from Paros, Antiparos island has a life of its own beneath the Cycladic sun. It’s a small island of many faces: beaches of serene beauty, cosmopolitan bars and restaurants, as well as places of historical and archaeological intrigue. Take a walk in Kastro, the central residential area of the island, which presents a perfect example for the fortress-like homes that remained after Venetian rule. Tour the remarkable Cave of Antiparos, which holds findings from the Stone Age within, as well as Despotikó, the uninhabited islet with beautiful beaches and the ancient Temple of Apollon and Artemis, where the first ritualistic restaurant of the Aegean Sea was discovered, dating back to the 8th century BC. 

A walk through two small pine forests leads to the picture-perfect port of this small village, filled with traditional tavernas. During the summer, there are daily routes to neighbouring islands such as Antiparos, Naxos, Ios and the Koufonissia via small boats. Days go by at a leisurely pace at Piso Livadi, with visitors lounging on the golden sands of the village’s breathtaking beach, and enjoying sweeping sea views and delicious cocktails at nightfall. A visit to the church of Agios Georgios Thalassitis, which dates back to the 13th century, will introduce you to remarkably poignant paintings. 

A stone’s throw from Summer Senses Luxury Resort, Marpissa is a gorgeous village built amphitheatrically on the crest of a small hill. Filled with beautiful Cycladic houses hailing back to the 16th and 17th centuries and paved with cobblestoned alleyways, this timeless destination will charm even the most discerning of visitors. The authentic character of this village, castle-like and with interconnecting yards in front of each house, is revealed to visitors during the “Routes in Marpissa” festival which takes place here every August. Local residents showcase the traditions of their home by keeping memories of the past alive through museums and cultural activities. 

The vast stretch of golden sand and clear, shallow waters which have earned a Blue Flag are brilliant focal features of the largest beach on Paros. Strong winds make it ideal for windsurfers, who coast over the waves with exhilaration, but there’s something for everyone here; it’s no coincidence that this beach is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Fully organised and dotted with bars and restaurants, it also features a fully equipped surf club for fans of the sport. 

50 shades of… blue are reflected in its turquoise waters, as the granite rocks, sculpted by wind and waves, cast their shade upon the sea. The otherworldly views of Kolymbithres Beach instantly captures the gazes of those who visit. This beach has been named after the natural pools which have been shaped over the centuries and look like the holy basins used for performing baptisms in the churches of Greece. You can find Kolymbithres Beach in Northwest Paros, 5km to the west of  the bay of Naoussa and at a 10km distance from Parikia. It’s an organised beach, perfect for families with young children as its waters are shallow, warm and protected by the wind. 

Nestled beneath a small gulf on the north side of Paros and completely sheltered from the wind, Faraggas Beach is an up-and-coming destination, which has still kept its air of seclusion. Every year, it earns more and more admirers in search of complete and utter relaxation, with powdery sand, clear waters and protection from the occasional gust of wind. Only one beach bar-restaurant and water sport centre can be found in this quiet bay, making it perfect for families. 

Crystalline sapphire waters and soft, golden sand set the scene on one of the most popular beaches on Paros. Santa Maria, on the northeast side of the island, has a distance of 2 km from Naoussa and 15 km from Parikia, and seamlessly combines a cosmopolitan aura of fun with serene ambience. The tiny bays along its length are perfectly secluded; this is also a great surfing destination, easily reachable and completely organised with beach bars, restaurants and water sport facilities. Mikri Santa Maria is a more “low profile” beach, at a short distance from this one but just as stunning.

A mere heartbeat from Summer Senses, barely two minutes away on foot, is Punda Beach. Known for its crystal clear, deep blue waters, it’s a favourite in Paros; modern, cosmopolitan vibes and refreshing cocktails take centre stage at its two beach bars, with mesmerising Aegean Sea vistas sealing every moment in the memory of onlookers. Surrounded by shady eucalyptus and tamarisk trees, the pale sands of this beach are the ultimate destination for unforgettable summer moments.

The most daring of adventurers can try the 6 km Punda Beach-Mesada-Tserdakia-Chrissi Akti (Golden Beach)-Drios route, which combines hiking with an exploration of the island’s best-kept secrets.
