PIRATES FESTIVAL ON 23RD OF AUGUST

Following the excitement of the 15th of August celebrations, come the last few weeks of the peak summer season which are arguably the climax of the summer for certain Cycladic Islands. Among these is Paros which celebrates some of its most important historical and traditional moments during this period.
Every year, just nine days after the assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 23rd Paros locals and visitors alike, celebrate the historical victory of the island against the Turkish Pirate Barbarossa in 1537. Pirate raids used to be incredibly common threat to Greek islands throughout the middle ages and many villages even tried to hide the fact that they
were inhabited for extra protection. As a result of this, the win was monumental and has grown to become one of the most anticipated festivals of the entire year.

Held in Naoussa, preparations begin just after the Assumption of Mary in order to make sure that everything is in place for the perfect reenactment. During the festival youths dress up in traditional clothes as well as masks and disguises in order to represent the raids and the battle with bonfires and fireworks marking the occasion. The celebrations continue well into the next morning with music, dancing, and traditional dishes to be enjoyed. This event, other than marking an important historical occasion and boasting a wonderfully jovial energy, also demonstrates how closely connected to their roots the local population is, highlighting a genuine love for where they are from and the stunning island.
