A TRIP TO THE PAST AT THE FOLKLORE MUSEUM OF MARPISSA

Have you ever wondered what life was like in the Cyclades villages back when technology, social media and tourism had not made an appearance? We have too and every village sparks the imagination, sending us on mental trips to the past. The narrow cobbled streets, winding pathways and uphill footpaths lined with whitewashed little homes hide years of rich folklore and a vast cultural legacy that has undoubtedly shaped the present. If you are eager to find out more, only one destination stands out: the Folklore Museum of Marpissa.

Set off from Summer Senses Luxury Resort and reach charming Marpissa village in less than five minutes! Wander round the labyrinthine paved roads and take in the aroma of the bougainvilleas on your way to the Folklore Museum. Hosted in a beautifully restored stone building in the town square of Agios Nikolaos, the museum is a faithful representation of a traditional Parian home, arranged to reflect the most authentic representation of life in the past. Its rooms – foyer, kitchen, storage room, bathroom and even a barber shop by the main entrance – have been meticulously preserved, offering a wonderful glimpse into the island’s way of life, thanks to the brilliant initiative of the Women’s Association of Marpissa in 1997.

What’s more, all items exhibited within the museum have been donated by Marpissa residents with each object carrying along a unique history and years of tradition. The furniture, the old wooden loom, the utensils and the garments that were in use in the past, have been repurposed to serve as reminders of the island’s legacy for those in the know and a window into Paros’ past for visitors.

The Folk Museum of Marpissa is open every Sunday from October until the end of May while from June to September it is open daily from 19:00-21:00, the perfect option for a quick yet fulfilling excursion.
