One of the most important events on the yearly Greek calendar is the 25th of March. This National Holiday is celebrated both for historical and religious reasons and it proves to be one of the most prominent events of the entire year. The historical segment relates to, and honours, Greek Independence from the Ottoman Empire, which was achieved through the victory of the Greek Revolution. The religious part, is celebrated because the 25th of March is recognised by the Greek Orthodox Church as the day the virgin Mary was told by archangel Gabriel that she would be mother to Jesus Christ and it falls exactly 9 months before Christmas.

25TH OF MARCH IS CELEBRATED BOTH FOR HISTORICAL AND RELIGIOUS REASONS AND IT PROVES TO BE ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT EVENTS OF THE ENTIRE YEAR.

The Cycladic Island of Paros celebrates this holiday alongside the rest of the country, and in no way shies away from the traditions, but rather embraces them wholeheartedly with an exceptional sense of pride, placing its own signature stamps on the occasion. The celebrations begin with the Divine Liturgy at Ekatontapyliani Church found in Parikia town. The Byzantine church is visited by locals, as well as visitors who come from all over the island for a special ceremony. The day continues with parades through all of the villages of the island, led by students and children who are learning about the country’s and island’s impressive history and sharing their pride.

No greek celebration is complete without a festive feast, and the 25th of March has a very specific customary meal: Bakaliaros skordalia (fried cod with garlic sauce). This dish is incredibly important as it interrupts the fasting period of lent, but was permitted by the Church long ago as result of the religious nature of the day. On Paros, often locals gather in the central squares of the villages to share drinks, including traditional ouzo and tsipouro, as well as Greek appetisers and, of course, fried cod. The National holiday celebrations of the island provide incredible insight into the unique community experiences that are ongoing throughout the year.
